Service Description

Behaviour is often the first and loudest signal staff are asked to respond to, yet it is rarely the full story. In residential and wider childcare settings, children’s actions are shaped by loss, trauma, disrupted attachment, fear, and unmet need. When behaviour is viewed only as something to manage or correct, opportunities for understanding, connection, and meaningful change are missed. This session supports staff to look beyond behaviour and begin to understand what it may be communicating. Instead of asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?” staff are guided to ask, “What is this child telling us, and how can we respond in a way that builds safety and trust?” Delivered by experienced practitioners with extensive frontline and teaching backgrounds, this training blends real world insight with reflective practice. Staff explore how behaviour develops as a response to experience, why some children may present as emotionally younger than their chronological age, and how survival responses can appear in everyday interactions. The focus is not on lowering expectations, but on responding with clarity, consistency, and compassion. Through practical examples, shared reflection, and discussion grounded in real practice, staff learn how to remain curious under pressure, reduce reactive responses, and strengthen relationships during challenging moments. This approach supports calmer homes, more consistent care, and improved outcomes for children and young people. For managers, this session helps build a confident and reflective staff team. Practitioners who understand the meaning behind behaviour are better equipped to respond effectively, reduce escalation, and evidence child centred, needs led practice. This directly supports inspection readiness, staff retention, and a positive team culture. The session is delivered remotely and can be accessed from any device. Learning is validated throughout, and certificates are issued upon successful completion, contributing to staff CPD. Suitable for residential childcare, fostering, and wider childcare settings, the session can be delivered to up to ten learners at excellent value. This training does not offer quick fixes. It equips staff with understanding, confidence, and purpose, helping them consistently see the child behind the behaviour.
