Advanced Safeguarding
Recognising risk, strengthening professional judgement and protecting children in residential care
Service Description
Advanced Safeguarding is a live, interactive course designed specifically around the realities of safeguarding children in residential care. Rather than simply revisiting policies and procedures, the course develops the professional curiosity, knowledge and judgement practitioners need to recognise concerns, understand risk and make confident safeguarding decisions when real situations are rarely black and white. Participants explore safeguarding and child protection responsibilities, signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, professional curiosity, disclosures, cumulative concerns and the importance of noticing changes, patterns and information that may not immediately appear significant. The course examines child sexual exploitation, child criminal exploitation, grooming, missing episodes and wider contextual risks, including situations where children may not recognise themselves as vulnerable or understand the risks surrounding them. Crucially, the session focuses on what practitioners actually do when something does not feel right. Participants explore responding appropriately to disclosures, recording concerns accurately and objectively, sharing information, escalating concerns and professionally challenging decisions or unsafe practice when necessary. Realistic scenarios, discussion, professional experience and reflective questioning are used throughout. Practitioners are encouraged to look beyond the obvious, question assumptions and connect safeguarding legislation and guidance with the decisions they make during everyday shifts. The aim is not simply to create practitioners who know the safeguarding procedure. It is to develop adults who understand why those systems exist, recognise when pieces of information may form a bigger picture and have the confidence to act when a child may be at risk. Following the session, each participant completes an individual Learning Validation & Reflection. Every submission is personally assessed before certification. Where further learning is required, a complimentary 30-minute 1:1 follow-up session is offered before reassessment. Up to 15 attendees per session
